Does Your Pet Qualify? (Medium to Large dogs only)

At this time, we are only accepting pets greater than ~18 lbs. Unfortunately, smaller dogs are at much higher risk of heat exhaustion,  in addition to increased anxiety levels (i.e. bigger dogs running around them for an hour). For now, smaller dogs can enjoy our daily dog walking and pet sitting services. As Pets Downtown continues to expand, we will adamantly work to create opportunities that include a many smaller dogs as possible!

That being said, we want you to know that your pup is priority, no matter the size! Claim a $5 Pets Downtown gift certificate, available for any pet sitting, dog walking, and overnight services by clicking here.

Is this program right for you?

Pets Downtown aims to be the country's #1 most trusted provider for urban pet care. We understand that urban pets require specialized care that differs from typical household pets. We've found that many urban pets face very overlapping issues (due to inherent factors such as smaller indoor spaces, a need for constant supervision outside, and more).

The most common problems most urban dogs encounter are....

COMMON PROBLEM #1: URBAN PETS DO NOT RECEIVE ENOUGH EXERCISE

“If it’s at all possible to provide your dog with off leash romping-roaming-dogness, do so as often as you can. It’s my greatest piece of advice for his prolonged health.”
— Victoria Stillwell, World Renown Dog Trainer and host of 'It's Me or the Dog'

Most urban pets receive far less than 60 minutes of exercise between the hours of 8:00-5:00, and over half of dogs in the United States are overweight. Typical household pets have much larger indoor space to roam around, as well as fenced in backyards that do not require constant supervision. Urban pets are generally confined to much smaller indoor spaces, and need constant supervision outside to prevent issues with other dogs.

While leashed walks are good, off-leash exercise is unquestionably the most ideal form of exercise. Why? Off-leash exercise allows dogs to move and interact in the most natural and safe manner. Next time you are around  off-leashed dogs, pay close attention to how they interact with their surroundings and other dogs. For example, a typical dog may first run in short and intensive spurts, then they may suddenly slow down and smell just about anything they can, then they may play and socialize, etc.

With long leash walks, it's very hard to accurately gauge the needs and wants of your dog. In addition,  most dogs have a tendency to pull on the leash when they are excited - or get pulled when they walk too slowly  - often causing pain or discomfort.

COMMON PROBLEM #2: URBAN PETS DO NOT GET ENOUGH SOCIAL INTERACTION

Just like humans, dogs are pack animals and require extensive social bonding to insure optimal happiness and health. Lack of social interaction and play induces depression, anxiety, unwanted chewing, barking, and much more.

It's especially important for younger dogs to receive extensive socialization in early years, as play actually teaches dogs how to respect the boundaries of other dogs and teaches the rules of proper conduct.  To put it another way, play teaches dogs canine manners. Dogs who are not properly socialized are generally more aggressive and territorial than dogs who engage in frequent playtime.

Additionally, many urban pets exhibit extraordinarily high levels of separation anxiety. For some dogs, their whole day is spent alone waiting for their owners to return. We are proud to offer a service that guarantees healthy and safe playtime that will leave your dog happy while you are busy at work.

COMMON PROBLEM #3: URBAN PETS DO NOT RECEIVE ENOUGH MENTAL STIMULATION

While exercise and socialization are necessary components for a happy dog and healthy dog, mental stimulation is just as important. Dogs on-leash are given less opportunities to stop and smell the roses, or fire hydrants for that matter. Our off-leash program will be rich with active games, chew toys, and more. Your dog is welcome to chase a ball...(or a squirrel, for that matter).

BONUS PROBLEM: Texas is HOT AF

The infamous Texas summer is looming, and it's imperative that your dog gets as much exercise as possible before the day gets too hot. Come July, it's unlikely that you'll be in the mood to take your dog out for an hour in the evening when the heat has finally cooled down.

In addition, walking a dog on hot pavements can be very dangerous as dogs absorb most heat through their paws. Paw blistering is common for Texan dogs, and can be avoided with off -lease exercise.

Note from the Owner/Founder:

As far as I can tell, there is no other apartment + condo complex offering this type of service anywhere (if a similar program exists, I have yet to find it). The reason I created this program is that I've had the pleasure of walking over hundreds of urban pets, and many (if not most) of them suffer from one or more of the problems presented above. It's not the fault of the owners- there simply doesn't exist a smart solution for urban pets...until now. This unique program will set our already incredible dog community apart, and our dogs have the opportunity to be the happiest urban pets in all of Austin.

This program has been a success for nearly a year. Each day, my heart is warmed as each day the dogs joyfully played with their new friends, and most of their owners report that their normally restless dogs were tired and happy.  It is honestly the happiest I've seen some the dogs (apart from when they are with their owners). I hope you try us out and see for yourself. Don't forget to check out the photos down below!
